Eelgrass Pavilion
The Eelgrass Pavilion brings material from the sea to the land, experimenting for the first time with eelgrass as a construction material in Estonia’s public space. Historically, eelgrass (Zostera marina) has been used as upholstery filling and, in Denmark, as a roofing and insulation material. Common in Estonian waters, this deciduous plant has considerable potential for the local construction market due to its rapid regrowth cycle and low carbon footprint. Rolled into repurposed fishing nets, the eelgrass roof offers shade and a place to rest for swimmers at Paljassaare. The pavilion was realised within the framework of the City of Tallinn’s Green Footprint project.
