Modular Renovation of Soviet Mass Housing

This project was developed for a two-phase ideas competition initiated by the Ministry of Climate of Estonia to create modular renovation solutions for the four most common Soviet mass-housing typologies in Estonia. Our proposal sees large-scale renovation as a broad stroke opportunity not only to improve energy performance, but to transform the image, functionality and spatial quality of entire neighbourhoods.

‘Filigraan’ stands for a lightweight system of metal and timber façade layers that can accommodate new entrances and lifts, veranda-like terraces, balconies of different sizes, and enlarged windows. Drawing on classical architectural principles and devices often enjoyed in timeless architecture, the system seeks to give existing buildings greater depth, proportion and identity while remaining adaptable to prefabricated renovation methods.
